If you’re weighing shea butter vs shea oil, here’s the short version: it’s the same shea, in two different forms. The butter is rich and sealing, best for dry skin that wants deep moisture. The oil is light and fast, best if you want the glow without the weight. Same nut, same wildcrafted source in Northern Ghana. One is simply thicker than the other.

Shea butter vs shea oil: what’s actually different
Our shea oil is the fluid part of the shea nut, virgin and cold pressed. Our raw shea butter is the whole butter, hand-kneaded for at least forty minutes. So the difference you feel comes down to texture and speed. The oil spreads fast and sinks in clean, leaving softness rather than a film. The butter melts in slower and sits close to the skin, sealing moisture in. Neither one is better. They’re made for different jobs, and for different skin.
Choose by your skin type
- Dry or very dry skin: reach for the butter. It’s richer and more occlusive, so it holds moisture where skin needs it most.
- Normal or combination skin: either works. Plenty of people use the oil in the morning and the butter at night.
- Oily or acne-prone skin: go with the oil, used lightly. The butter can feel heavy, and very oily skin usually prefers the lighter form or a targeted dab.
Choose by how you’ll use it
- Face: the oil suits most people; the butter works as a night treatment for drier skin.
- Body: butter for dry patches, elbows, knees, heels. Oil for a quick all-over finish.
- Hair: both condition and add shine. The oil is lighter with less weight; the butter smooths ends and tames frizz.
- On the go: the oil, since it absorbs fast and won’t leave you greasy.

Still not sure? Start here
If your skin runs dry, or you want one rich product that does almost everything, start with our Manteca de karité cruda. If you want something light that disappears into the skin, or the butter has ever felt too heavy for you, start with our Aceite de karité. Both are raw, unrefined and food-grade, made from the same wildcrafted shea by a women-led cooperative in Northern Ghana. You can even cook with them.
One honest note: shea is low in the proteins that usually set off tree-nut allergies, but if you have a serious nut allergy, check with your doctor before using either one.
