If your skin gets shiny by midday, clogs easily, or just feels congested, a clay mask is the simplest reset there is. Clay binds to the oil and buildup sitting on your skin and lifts it away when you rinse. Ours does that with a single ingredient, and it’s not the clay you’re expecting.

What it actually is: termite-mound clay
Most clay masks are bentonite or kaolin, mined and processed. Ours is pure ant-mound clay, sometimes called termite clay, harvested from mounds in Northern Ghana. Termites dig deep and bring fine, mineral-rich subsoil to the surface to build with, and that soil makes a remarkably smooth, effective clay. It’s a traditional material, not a lab product. One ingredient, nothing added, nothing to it but the earth.
Because we harvest sustainably and never take from the same mound more than twice a year, the colour shifts a little batch to batch. That’s not a fault, it’s the sign of a raw, single-source material. It also means the clay doesn’t expire. Keep it dry and it lasts.
Why clay works for oily skin
- It binds oil. Clay draws excess oil and surface buildup off the skin, so you feel genuinely cleaner after rinsing rather than just stripped.
- It refines the look of pores. Right after use, skin looks firmer and more pulled together, especially across the T-zone.
- It smooths texture. As it dries it gives a gentle refining effect that adds up with regular use.
- It supports clearer skin over time. By keeping excess oil and congestion down, a clay mask helps a breakout-prone complexion look clearer.
It won’t work overnight and it isn’t a spot treatment. It’s a twice-or-three-times-a-week habit that keeps oily skin in better balance.
How to use it
- Add 2 to 3 teaspoons to a bowl, drizzle in water, and mix to a smooth paste. Let it sit a minute to activate.
- Apply to clean skin, avoiding the eye area. Leave 10 to 15 minutes, until it’s dry.
- Rinse well, then moisturise with one of our oils or butters.
- Use 2 to 3 times a week, adjusting to how your skin feels.
Two upgrades worth trying
Swap the water for one of our toners for a more targeted mask. Or make a foaming mud-mask: mix the clay with our Jabón negro de limoncillo until it’s smooth and muddy, apply like a mask, then wet your hands and massage in circles to raise a gentle foam before rinsing. Clay plus black soap is a proper cleanse-and-mask in one.
A note for dry or sensitive skin
All skin types can use this, you just adjust. Oily and combination skin can mask more often. If your skin is dry or sensitive, use a thinner layer, rinse a little earlier, and always follow with an oil or butter so you finish comfortable, not tight.
