Ours uses cocoa pod ash, the burnt husks of the cocoa pod, which gives the soap its natural alkaline base. That base is what lifts away oil, sweat, sunscreen, and a day’s worth of buildup. Coconut and palm kernel oil bring the lather, the part that makes it feel like it’s actually cleaning. Wild northern honey softens the whole thing so the cleanse doesn’t feel harsh. No synthetic surfactants, no hardening agents, no fragrance oils. When people say black soap, this is what they mean, and most of what’s sold under the name isn’t it.

The lemongrass part

Lemongrass oil is what you’ll notice first. Bright, citrusy, a little sharp, the kind of clean smell that wakes you up in the shower. It’s not a heavy perfume, it’s a fresh one, and it rinses away with the soap rather than clinging to your skin. Lemongrass also has a long history in Ghanaian homes for keeping mosquitoes at bay. We won’t pretend a body wash replaces proper repellent, but your bathroom will smell like it means business.

The honest part: this soap is strong

Traditional black soap is alkaline, and that’s exactly why it cleans so well. The trade-off is real: alkaline cleansers can leave some skin feeling tight or stripped if you overdo it, because your skin barrier prefers to sit slightly acidic. So a few honest rules.

Use a small amount. A little genuinely goes a long way.

Rinse well, and moisturise after, especially if your skin leans dry.

This one is best for normal skin. It’s not recommended for sensitive skin, since the essential oil and the strong cleanse can be too much for skin that irritates easily.

If your skin is more oily or breakout-prone, our Savon noir à l'arbre à thé is the same idea with tea tree instead of lemongrass, aimed at problem-prone skin.

How to use it

Face and body wash: dispense a small amount, lather in your hands, cleanse, rinse well.

Makeup remover: build lather in your palms, massage gently over makeup, rinse thoroughly.

Brush cleaner: work a little into makeup brushes, then rinse until the water runs clear.

The Ghana odour-control trick: rub fresh lime on underarms first, rinse, then wash with the soap for a properly fresh finish.

One care note. Because it’s real soap with nothing added to stabilise it, black soap thickens over time as the water slowly evaporates. That’s normal. Keep it closed, shake before use, and store it somewhere cool and dry.

The details

GHS 180 for a 500ml bottle. Handmade in Achimota, Accra. Zero preservatives, zero emollients, zero filler. Just the recipe.

Get Skin Gourmet Lemongrass Black Soap here.

Search “African black soap” and you’ll find a hundred versions of it, most made nowhere near Africa, most padded with fragrance, glycerin, and hardeners that traditional black soap never had.
